Mini Aussie Fur Coarse And Wiry Down His Spine

We have a Miniature Aussie pup that is now almost 10 months old. This is our first experience with a Mini Aussie.

His hair is very soft and smooth everywhere except for down his spine. There it is very coarse and wiry. Some good friends of ours have two Mini Aussie's out of the same parents and theirs has very soft hair on their back.

Is this something that will change as he gets older? Is there anything I should be doing differently with his coat?

Thank you for your help!

Hard to say

Hard to say since there is no picture so I am going off limited knowledge here. Since you said that his parents and siblings all have smooth hair then that throws mixbreeding out the window.

Anyway, I have seen something like this happen to other dogs that are breeds with usually soft hair but the puppy itself has funny feeling, often smelly, wiry hair that feels dirty to the touch. The reason for their hair being this way is usually the food lacking something that the puppy needs to grow a proper healthy coat. Have you changed his food from the one the breeder told you? Try asking your friends that own the siblings what diet they feed the dog and compare it with yours.

That being said it could also be one of those things that fade as they age but wiry hair on Aussies is not normal, at least not in my experience.
