Mini Aussies in Floria

by Alexandra
(OFallon, MO, USA)

Hi Everyone! I have a 1 1/2 year old Mini Aussie named Margo. She is just the best dog. My husband recently accepted a job offer in Florida from Missouri. It gets super hot in Missouri but obviously not all year round, so I wanted some advice, mainly on her coat length.

She, like most Aussies is super fluffy and has a thick coat. I have never had her shaved as I have been told that is a no no due to their undercoat. My groomer also said if you cut them too short, their skin can get irritated.

For those of you who live in Florida or anywhere hot all year, what do you do with your Aussie as far as grooming? Will she be okay leaving her coat as is or should I get it trimmed shorter?

Thanks!

Alexandra

I live in southeast Texas where it is very hot and very, very humid. I have never had my Mini Aussie trimmed. Her hair is just how God gave her. She does seem to get hot during the summer, so just walk her in the mornings before it really steams up. She is a house dog and use to the a/c with a fan running towards her crate at night. She enjoyed sleeping on the tile floors during the day to cool off. She will be 9 in November.

I used to live in Arizona and there is a dry heat there. We had two regular Aussies there and never had their coats groomed short. Their coat acts as insulation from the heat and the cold. Also the fact that Florida's heat is humid also helps to keep the coat moist. The dogs adjust to the temperature and find cool areas in which to go.
