Miniature Australian Shepherd Puppy Hates the Sun

Our 11-week-old Miniature Australian Shepherd puppy seems to have trouble in the sun—not from being too hot, but he actually seems bothered by or afraid of the light?

He will only go in the shade on walks and sits down, squints, and barks if he can only be in the sun. He isn’t at a genetic risk for eye issues, but wondering if anyone else has experienced this "fear" of sunlight. Wondering if this is something I should ask my vet about or if he will grow out of it with exposure!

Genetic issues

Is he blue eyed? Friends blue eyed pup had squinting issues from sun but not as bad as yours, she still does if out working cattle all day. You should have his eyes examined. Even though his parents are genetic tested clear he could still have eye issues. My 14 wk boy was diagnostic with bad elbows even though parents & grandparents were rated good. You just don't know. So for the sake of your pup have him examined. Hope it's nothing more than irritation.

is your aussie merle? our 2 year old red merle squints a lot when he's outside, he has one blue eye and one hazel/brown. His iris almost looked like it hadn't developed correctly. Doing some research I found he may have iris hypoplasia. So far no issues with his sight but his pupils don't dilate like they should so he's more sensitive to light.
