Not Having Any Success Potty Training Our Australian Shepherd

by Michelle
(Texas)

We don't seem to be having any success potty training our Aussie. We have read many articles and striven to follow all the advice. We are crate training him. We take him straight to the potty spot after letting him out of his crate. We don't give him any attention until he pees or poops. Then we praise and reward him. We constantly supervise him and take him out often.

Regardless, he still attempts regularly to pee in the house. He also pees in his crate. We have followed all the advice with setting up his crate and making sure it is only big enough for him to stand up and turn around in. He has been checked by a vet and confirmed he is healthy.

It is very discouraging. We have never had trouble house training our dogs before. Not sure what to do...

Sudden
by: Neil Coy

I have a ten year old tri-color that I thought I would never get house trained. Everything tried seemed to fail. All of a sudden one day he went to the door and whined to go out and do his duty. It was like all of sudden a light bulb went off in his brain and he said NOW I understand what they have been wanting. In the 10 years since, he has had only one accident when excitement overloaded his desire to do it right. Stick with it, he will eventually catch on.

Crazy? Maybe, but it works

I don't know anything about crate training,
Not my thing, but I have an aussie now that struggled with house training. First time for everything I guess.
I do the old fashioned paper training, and while my aussie was great about going on the paper she wouldn't transition to outside, so I took her out early, while it was still dark, and I went first, yes, in the yard.
It took one time and she got it!
Good luck
