Older Dog Can't Relax Around New Puppy

by Lisa
(Illinois)

We have a 14 month old mini Aussie and recently added a new Aussie pup to the family. The puppy is 15 weeks old. Our older Aussie can’t seem to relax around the new pup.

She constantly wants to play with him and never seems to pick up on his clues that he’s tired and has had enough. We are also letting them outside separately because our older Aussie has a broken toe that is splinted and we don’t want her running on it. When the new pup comes in from outside she immediately jumps at him and barely lets him in through the door.

Any advice on how to chill her out around the new dog? It’s so hard to refocus her if he’s around, it’s almost as if we don’t exist. It’s becoming very difficult to care for them both.
