Our Aussie Passed Last Sunday - New to Forum, Several Questions

by PaCowboy

In 98 I brought an Aussie (Cowley) home from Wyoming for my wife who had recently, accidentally ran over our Collie. She fell in love with Cowley and the Aussie breed. Our 4th Aussie (Lucy) died suddenly on Sunday from anaphylactic shock... we believe the result of a bee sting. Loss of Lucy was very difficult for me, much worse for my wife.

Lucy was 9 years old. Our daughter, next door, has Lucy’s sister, Oakley. Both Lucy and Oakley had TPLO surgery to stabilize the knee joint after a rupture of the cranial cruciate ligament. We found out then that a genetic weakness existed in their bloodline that allowed the rupture to more readily occur.

I want to find another Aussie but I want to avoid, to the extent possible, any adverse genetic issues... any advice?

Also, is the AKC registration for Aussie purebreds or is there another organization?

Re: Torn ACL Ligament
by: Lizzy

Sorry for your loss. I read ACL, abbreviation for anterior cruciate ligament, tears, so common now, can be result of spaying, or neutering too early. Evidently, the secondary sex hormones that develop in puberty and after, finish out the ligaments for strength. Spay/neuter prior to puberty, without consequent secondary sex hormones prevent function full development. Wait for first estrus or until sexually mature. In addition to effects on ACLs, dogs spayed/ neutered before maturity have an increased chance of bone cancer.
