Our Australian Shepherd, "Ghost" Is 6 Months Old Today

by Mike
(Wickenburg, Arizona)

Our Australian Shepherd is 6 months old today. We understand that she should start her periods anytime now. Please tell us what to expect and how long this lasts? Is this "heat"? Will she be quick to run off during this phase? Please help prepare us.
Thank You

Ghost is 6 months old
by: Anne

Yes, this is what you call a "heat cycle". There is swelling and bleeding. It last from 2-3 weeks.
They usually come into "Heat" at 7 - 10 mths of age, but have heard of aussies coming in as late as 18 mths old.
And YES she will likely run off and find a mate. Please keep her isolated during this time.
Why do you call her Ghost? Just curious.
If you don't plan to breed her or be a responsible pet owner..PLEASE have her spayed. We, Aussie Rescues, have too many to rescue from shelters, private homes, and the streets right now. So please Please do your homework and do what is BEST for your dog and the breed. There is a lot involved in breeding if you are going to do it the right way. If you aren't going to do it the right way, then our breed suffers.
