I started painting dogs in pastel because they gave me the vibrancy and realism necessary to capture the expression in a dog's eyes and to render their fur realistically. This was just what I had to have to capture my beautiful dog, Tucker.
A good photo reference is always very important. This shot was taken at our cottage with Tucker proudly standing on the bow of our boat. He was caught at just the right moment with the back light behind him. I knew that the cool colors in the forest would make an awesome background for his warm brown eyes.
Since that time I have played around with backgrounds. I have taken a shot of Tucker playing Flyball and transposed the background to show him running through a field.
I love painting all dogs, but it is a special joy to capture his soul in a moment to be enjoyed forever.
