Socializing A Hyper Aussie Mix

Hi there. We have an Australian Shepherd hound mix. High energy of course. He is a 3 yo neutered male. We have had him since he was 4 weeks old. Very friendly with people. However, I cannot find a dog that he will play with.

We have been thinking about getting a female dog similar to an Aussie to help wear him down. He is extremely toy oriented. Recently, he has shown toy aggression at the dog park. I'm worried that this happened because he has been in an apartment all his life while we were in college.

Being recently graduated we have started going out on trails, swimming, more dog park, and out downtown. I don't know what else to do to help him socialize with dogs and get him to play.

We had an experience about 2 years ago where we rescued a Beagle that was all about playing. They did well with each other, but since then after finding the dog's owner we cannot find another dog that he will play with. He just ignores the curious ones or growls mildly at the hyper ones.

I don't want to force him to be something he isn't, but I feel like another dog would be good to get him used to playing with other dogs.

Any suggestions or comments? Thanks.

it depends on the dogs personality and where you got it from. it’s most likely because of the personality. it probably has a reserved personality so there’s really nothing you can do to change it. it’s just how he was born. maybe you could try introducing one dog and let him get friendly then another dog and then another.
