Spaying My Mini Aussie

by Brianna
(Vancouver, BC)

I am spaying my Mini Aussie on Wednesday and I have been told this will ruin her silky soft coat. I am very nervous as I do not want her coat to change! Has anyone experienced this after spaying their Aussies? She is just over 2 years old.

Also, will spaying her help/make her aggressive dominance stop? I have been reading about that as well and everything I have read are so opposite.

She acts very dominant mostly around my girl cat. Growling, chasing after, etc., and when I yell stop and go to pick her up(to put her in her kennel for a 'time out') she growls at me. This is mostly when she gets in her heat cycle, although it does happen when she is out of it.

Thanks!

Setting boundaries

I have never experienced the spay or neuter changes the coat. It may calm her down, but it is up to you to set the structure and rules in the house for her to follow.

Whoever told you that about the coat is wrong, or perhaps crazy. The behavior issues should be addressed by an experienced, non-violent trainer.

Responsible pet owners spay or neuter their animals. Discuss the issue with your vet for more information.

My male Mini Aussie was a stud with longer coat that never matted until I neutered him at age 10. Vet couldn't explain. I would not hesitate to neuter but be prepared to step up grooming schedule. I avoid conditioning bath products that advertise silky coat or detangling but make too silky, aka matted mess, and use castille soaps instead.
