Thinking of Getting an Australian Shepherd

by Jason
(Tampa, Fl)

I am thinking of getting an Aussie. I am looking for a dog that likes to curl up on my lap at the end of the day. Petting a furball is stress-relief for me. My Golden passed a few weeks ago and I didn't realize how much my 90lb lap dog helped me relieve stress. Also, my Golden Doodle would like a playmate. But he is not much of a lapdog.

Question 1: Are Aussies good for being cuddly lapdogs?

I have also been hearing that they are crazy with energy, to the point I am a little scared. The Golden Doodle likes to play and he has a lot of energy.

Question 2: Is an Aussie much more energetic than a Golden Doodle?

I don't want to get a dog and regret it.

I think if you go to a reputable breeder and explain your situation, they will be able to match you with a suitable pup. My guy has hyperdrive energy, but my friend's dog is much much calmer. Sounds like you need something between those two. They do love to cuddle though, no doubt about that. They are love bugs looking for a lap! Generally they get along with most dogs and people.

You definitely have to tire them out first, then they become more like a lap dog once exhausted. They love to cuddle once the exercise bouts are completed. The younger ones have endless energy but still enjoy an occasional nap. Older Aussies still need exercise, but not nearly as much. Be prepared to be welcomed like a hero every time you come home.
