Why Does Our 3-Year-Old Australian Shepherd Just Stop Walking?

by Ron
(Dunnellon, Florida, US)

We have a 3-year-old Australian shepherd that we raised from a puppy. We have been taking him to Rainbow Springs Park for 2 years now.

Back in the first week in January we were walking the same trail we always do and he just stopped. We couldn’t see or hear anything that would make him stop. The only way to get him to move was go back the way we came.

After returning to the park the next day he stopped again at a different spot. And again we had to turn back.

We tried another park and for the first 3-4 weeks he was great then he started to stop again. So we had to turn around. Now in our neighborhood he is doing the same thing.

Does anyone know what to do?

Sorry but I had to laugh. Our 10yr old boy does that a lot. I believe they just decide they don’t want to go that way! Or they are thinking about something - oh yes, they do think for themselves. Sometimes I wait him out with gentle pressure on the leash. My trick is to walk around behind him and give him a little nudge on the shoulder. As soon as he moves his feet, we’re off. Do let him win sometimes. Enjoy your quirky boy!
